F451 Essay
The book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury has many connections and similarities to today’s society, the connection Fahrenheit 451 and today’s society have is immense. While many might argue the there is no connection from the book to our society nowadays. However, with his predictions of the technology we would obtain now and social problems, the connection is indeed close.
One of the many predictions that were given to us in the book was about technology. The “seashells” were explained to us as a device in which you could hear any sounds or waves in your ear. These alone are a huge connection to our everyday lives, I know I use my earbuds almost every single day and I know you probably do to. The parlor walls were also a huge prediction Bradbury made that came to reality. The explanation that Bradbury gave us of the parlor walls were that they were huge tv screens that were essentially a wall. Nowadays you can go to a store and see tv’s for sell from 50 inches to 110 inches. It’s really astonishing seeing how Bradbury could predict and relate the book so much to today’s society. Thimble radios were also introduced to us by Bradbury which were described as little ear pieces in which you could listen to radio singles or waves. While this is only little of what he predicted, still a lot to take in and appreciate.
Although many people would argue that Bradbury didn’t predict or make any connections to today’s society. One of the main reasons people would say that there wasn’t a connection is that in our real world right now we don’t have electronic pets everywhere. In today’s society we don’t get brainwashed and controlled by the government as much as the characters in Fahrenheit 451 do. I will admit that we do get brainwashed but not as much as the people do in the book. One more example of the book and our reality nowadays not being similar is about the fires. In the book burning books is a job and firefighters are labeled as men who start fires rather than put them out. In today’s society the fireman are still only used for one thing, puttting out fires and that’s about it. Overall, there might be some connections but some would say that Bradbury didn’t predict anything at all.
The social problems in the book Fahrenheit 451 and in today’s society are very similar. The main social problem that both share is surrounded around technology. In the book evey single person is stuck on technology and brainwashed with the ideas that book are bad for them. In today’s world the situation is very similar, we are stuck on our phones 24/7 and avoid to read books at all costs. There was a part in the book that really emphasized the similarity of our social problems today, in the book Clarisse, stand out character, was a very social and talkative girl who was very curious about the world she was living in. While Clarisse viewed herself as normal everyone else thought otherwise and labeled her “weird” , why be weird if she was the only person in their society that was normal? The biggest similarity of our social problems between the book and our society was about the war. During the book every here and there you would see that planes would randomly fly over the town and people would wonder if that meant war was going to begin. If the same were to happen today everyone would also think like that, with the president we have in office today it’s hard to argue why anyone wouldn’t want to bomb us or attack us for all his stupid remarks. Although the Bradbury tried to warn us and no one listened, we change that.
Therefore the similarities outweigh the non similarities in the book Fahrenheit 451. While some people would still argue that Bradbury didn’t predict anything or didn’t have any similarities to today’s I beg to differ. While we can’t change what has already happened and affected our society we can for sure change what will happen in our future, the change begins with YOU.
