Gatsby essay

Prompt #2 “Is Gatsby’s desire for success—however we define it—evidence of the American dream, obsession, a personal sense of honor, or something else? Does Gatsby symbolize our culture and even our own desires, or is he an outlier?“

Gatsby Essay
Gatsby was living a dream. The desire to not only be rich but also have Daisy in his life was evidence of both the American dream and obsession. Although, others would argue that gatsby was not living a happy life but only doing it to make himself look better. With that being said Gatby was pursuing and achieved the American dream throughout his life.

The desire of living the American dream was always in gatbys mind ever since he was a young 17 year old. We first find out about gatsby wanting to live the American dream when he tries to get with daisy but things don’t really work out between them. One of the main reasons gatsby initially wanted to pursue the American dream was mainly for daisy. The second reason is gatby grew up a poor farmer in Narth Dakota and new that he didn’t want to continue living the same way forever. Gatsby does achieve the American dream ,not as others would but he does by selling illegal drugs, alcohol to be exact. Another piece of evidence that gatsby was living the American Dream is he had parties every single weekend and they weren’t just small parties. They were huge! Although gatsby did earn his money that way and hosted huge parties every weekend many people said he wasn’t living a happy life.

Gatsbys life wasn’t so pleasant you could say. Gatsby was always second place wether it was about money or daisy he was just never first. A big reason many people said gatsby didn’t live a happy life is that many people would discredit the way he earned his money. The way gatsby earned his money didn’t really please Tom who does try to discredit and call gatsby out for the way he was making money by saying “He and this Wolfshiem brought up a lot of side-street drug-stores here and in Chicago and sold grain alcohol over the counter.” Another reason people say gatsby didn’t live a pleasant life is he lost the love of his life without even knowing until returning from war after serving for the county. A main reason many would say gatsbys life wasn’t happy at all was because of his obsession to one day get daisy.

Gatsbys obsession to not only be rich but also get daisy was very noticable. Gatsbys rag to riches was all to get the attention of daisy and catch her attention in any type of way. One example of gatsbys obsession with daisy is he would always try and be very respectful and mannerly around her. Also another example is gatsby willing to take the blame for daisy of the death of Myrtle, not really obsession you could say maybe just loving her too much. One final example of gatsbys obsession to not only be with Daisy but have her was him forcing her to tell Tom she never loved him , this shows the obsession because it shows him wanting her only for him.

Gatsby was not only living the American dream but also living in a world where he was obsessed with daisy. Gatsby looked happy on the outside but deep down many people thought gatsby was living a miserable and sad life. In conclusion, gatsby not only achieved the American dream but he got what he wanted through his obsession.
